As MINI prepares to debut its John Cooper Works (JCW) GP model at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, the British automaker has all but confirmed that the high-performance model will come in hatchback form only.
In a recent interview, the GP’s development chief Jorg Weidinger confirmed that there are no immediate plans to share the JCW GP’s components with any other MINI models stating that the “GP has history: it was a hatch, it is a hatch and it should stay a hatch.”

In addition, the automaker has no plans of chasing any sort of record on the Nurburgring, despite the JCW GP turning in a lap time of 8 minutes and 23 seconds in testing. According to Weidinger, testing on the Nurburgring was strictly for development purposes only, and MINI is pleased with the fact that the JCW GP is 19 seconds faster than its predecessor.
